ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਂ, ਪਿਉ, ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਮਾਇਆ-(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ) ਸਾਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ, (ਦੁੱਖ ਵਾਪਰਨ ਤੇ ਭੀ ਸਹਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ)।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜੇਹੜਾ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ,
ਉਸ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਸੜਨ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ) ਠੰਢੇ-ਠਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਜਤਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਭੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸੰਤੋਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਇਆਂ ਮਨ ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਹੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ ਦਾਨ ਦੇਹ,
ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ! (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ) ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਏਹੋ) ਬੇਨਤੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੫॥੧੦॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਜਤਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਭੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸੰਤੋਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

हे भाई! माँ, पिता, पुत्र, या धन में से कोई भी स्थायी साथी नहीं बन सकता, न ही दुख के समय मदद कर सकता है। गुरु की संगति में सभी दुख दूर हो सकते हैं। हे भाई! परमात्मा सभी जीवों में व्याप्त है; उसके नाम का जप करते रहो, और कोई दुख तुम्हें नहीं छू सकता। हे भाई! संसार धन की तृष्णा और भुखमरी में फंसा हुआ है। जो लोग प्रभु की स्तुति करते हैं, उनके दिल ठंडे हो जाते हैं। हे भाई! करोड़ों प्रयासों के बाद भी धन से संतोष नहीं मिलता। प्रभु की स्तुति करने से मन को सुख मिलता है। हे प्रभु, जो सभी के दिलों को जानते हैं, मुझे अपनी भक्ति का दान दे। हे मालिक! यह आपके दास नानक की विनती है।

Mother, father, children and the wealth of Maya, will not go along with you.
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, all pain is dispelled. ||1||
God Himself is pervading, and permeating all.
Chant the Name of the Lord with your tongue, and pain will not afflict you. ||1||Pause||
One who is afflicted by the terrible fire of thirst and desire,
becomes cool, chanting the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||2||
By millions of efforts, peace is not obtained;
the mind is satisfied only by singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||
Please bless me with devotion, O God, O Searcher of hearts.
This is Nanak's prayer, O Lord and Master. ||4||5||10||
